RIB RUN HISTORY

In late 2003, Ronan Twomey from Bandon along with his two brothers Brendan and Ciaran decided they would like to attempt a long distance sea journey by RIB (Rigid inflatable boat), and at the same time raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.  Aberystwyth in Cardigan Bay was to be the destination, a round trip of 400 nm. News of that planned journey spread and soon many more boats decided to join in. The Kinsale to Aberystwyth Rib Run was born.

That first year, the last week in April 2004, 12 ribs and about 50 crew set off from Kinsale in a force 4 to 5 towards the first port of call which was to be Kilmore Quay in Wexford for refuelling ably helped by members of the Kilmore Lifeboat Crew. After crossing the Irish Sea to Strumble Head off Fishguard, the sight of the Fishguard Lifeboat welcomed them all to Wales. A last 40nm dash up the Welsh coast saw the fleet met offshore and escorted into harbour by the Aberystwyth Lifeboat and the local HM Coastguards. Two days later, the fleet did it all again......in reverse!

After that first Rib Run, it was decided at a meeting to make the Rib Run Annual, and a Committee was formed with Ronan as Chairman, Ashley Smyth, Graham ferguson, and Jon Mathers. A year later the committee was enlarged with the addition of Paula O'Sullivan. Rib Runs have been held annually since then and over €220,000 has been donated mainly to the RNLI. Many friends have been made between the Rib Crews who have taken part and the Crew of Aberystwyth Lifeboat who travel to Kinsale every year for the cheque Presentations.

All crews that take part in the Rib Run pay all their OWN expenses ensuring that every cent raised in sponsorship goes to the nominated charity.

The current Committee comprises of Ashley Smyth (Chairman), Graham Ferguson, Jon Mathers, Dave O'Leary and Paula O'Sullivan.
